Mark Peterson has high hopes for the energy forum to be held at PSU. Peterson, along with Nancy Boyda, Democratic congressional candidate for the 2nd District, will speak as well as Charles Benjamin, lobbyist for the Kansas chapter of the Sierra Club, and Reno Cecora, PSU adjunct faculty member. The speakers hope to spark a discussion with students and community members with the forum, titled "Running on Empty: The Future of Energy in America." The forum is being sponsored by the Green Gorillas and Campus Democrats.

Peterson, assistant professor of social sciences, says he hopes the forum will be well-attended.

"We are encouraging this to be a really interactive forum," Peterson said. "The audience will very much be a part of this. Less than half the time is actually going to be allocated to the speakers."

Peterson says the event deals largely with current and future energy conditions, such as the depletion of oil reserves and alternative forms of energy.

"Each person will be talking about something different," Peterson said.

Betsy Gordon, a member of the Green Gorillas, says the group has been talking about holding an energy forum for some time.

"We decided it would be a good time to do it in the fall, before the election," said Gordon. "We wanted to get a group of speakers together who can cover energy issues from different perspectives."

Jennifer Bishop, junior in biology, says the forum is important because energy affects everyone's life.

"It's important for people to take part in their community and in issues that affect their lives," said Bishop. "Heating over the winter, plastic technology from petroleum, and fertilizer are some. The list is endless."

Perry Morrow, freshman in biology, says that the forum will have practical benefits, too.

"People can learn to manage their energy more usefully," said Morrow. "It's important to know."

"Running on Empty: The Future of Energy in America" will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, in McCray Hall.
