| Only one item of business was discussed at this week's SGA meeting, which took place at Rockin' K steakhouse on Wednesday night. Senators unanimously passed a resolution to send a letter of support to Virginia Tech in the wake of a deadly student shooting last week. The meeting adjourned and the senators participated in the New/Old Senate banquet, which marks the transition from the old administration to the new. Jeremy Johnson, academic affairs director and president-elect, said he and vice president-elect Larry Fleury will propose a new cabinet and a budget for the next fiscal year. Johnson added that he expects his cabinet nominees will be approved the following week. As a year-in-review address, outgoing SGA President Ginger Niemann congratulated the Senate on the year's accomplishments. Among the highlights, Niemann listed the deferred maintenance bill as the biggest accomplishment of the year, especially the postcard drive to state legislators. "You guys have no idea how significant those 1,300 postcards were," she said. "They proved to be a real difference maker." Deferred maintenance refers to the need for state funding to update campus buildings throughout the state, a cause PSU's and other Kansas universities' student governments heavily promoted at the state capital. In addition, Niemann listed the performance of international rock star Salman Ahmad, and the addition of a new classified staff member to the SGA office as other major achievements. |
