| Religious faith should be rooted in love, not fear In response to Ms. Michelle Thomas' most recent letter (Collegio, 4/19/07): I never tried to "make a case" against Mr. Lyman (a visiting street preacher). This isn't "Law and Order." He has every right to say what he wants; I just turned up my iPod and got on with my life. I'm not naive enough to think that my opinion is the only right one and that everyone in the country should conform to it... Hmm. Also, I was VERY careful in my letter to the editor not to reveal my personal faith because it was irrelevant to what I was trying to say, and frankly, it's none of your business. You seem to be a constitutional scholar; maybe you recall the other aspects of the First Amendment as fervently as you remember freedom of speech. Finally, Ms. Thomas, maybe you didn't read my letter as analytically as you obviously think you did. My letter wasn't written in response to Mr. Lyman; it was written in response to you. I have no problem with religion; religious organizations like CrossQuest and FCA and others have done AMAZING things for Pitt, and I think everyone here applauds them. However, their methods are completely different than what you and Mr. Lyman preach. If I'm going to have a relationship with God, I want it to be based on peace and hope and forgiveness and love, and not just because I am afraid of punishment if I don't. Justin Shepard |
