The presentation, which consisted of an extensive PowerPoint along with explanations from students on various safety issues in the recycling center, was the final project for students in Flynn's classes. It was given at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, in room S109 of the Kansas Technology Center.
The 19 students covered a broad array of topics in their 75-minute presentation, ranging from management and leadership safety, to employee interaction, signage, forms and more.
"If everybody else is like I am, they're probably overwhelmed," said Gene Vogler, a member of the Friends of Recycling for Southeast Kansas, after the PowerPoint ended. Vogler added that he was "very impressed."
The students had worked since before spring break on the safety presentation, but they say spending months with their heads in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidebooks proved to be a rewarding experience.
"Before this it was just theoretical and out of the book," said Cole Bowman, senior in plastics engineering, who spoke on getting employees involved with safety. "This really helped us get out there into the workplace and identify hazards and work with the company to resolve those problems."
Flynn says employee responsibility was not only something to encourage the recycling center to implement, but also for students to employ in their future careers. He says he wants his students to lose their fear of OSHA, which makes some people "horribly frightened."
