The tuition increase should generate about $1.3 million, with about $900,000 being invested back into the university. Some of the tuition increase will go toward specific improvements to PSU. The university has made commitments to pay for new faculty and to invest in information systems. Both of those necessitated a 1.5 percent tuition increase for the past several years, and this is the last year for both of those projects. Bryant also says that at least 1 percent of the tuition increase will go to paying utilities.
Bryant says the 6.5 percent increase was the tuition committee's recommendation. Fees went unchanged from when they were discussed in student government and the fee increases will be presented to the Board of Regents during the May meeting for consideration.
The tuition council, the body that recommends a tuition increase to the president, started meeting early this semester. Deans and vice presidents present what they have done with the money they were given and what they will need in the future. The idea is to balance the needs of the university with the financial welfare of the students.
"Of course, our goal is to keep tuition as affordable as possible and still maintain the quality we want at Pitt State," said Bryant.
The tuition increase will not be official until it is approved at the Board of Regents meeting in June, but Bryant says he is confident that he will know how things will play out when the university presents its proposal next week.
