PSU's Pride of the Plains marching band will present the Brass Spectacular drum and bugle corps show at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Carnie Smith Stadium.
"This is the big leagues of marching band," said Doug Whitten, director of athletic bands at PSU.
The show, which promoters promise will highlight six of the nation's best drum and bugle corps, will stop in Pittsburg as part of a nationwide tour.
The six corps that will perform are part of a larger group of musicians from all over the world who are touring throughout summer in preparation for the World Championship, to be held in Madison, Wis.
Whitten says that the university is proud to host the event for several reasons.
"This allows us to show our facilities and our community and maybe make a little money," said Whitten. "The main reason is to get kids excited about music and support music education. Some kids may get recruited here at PSU."
Six Division 1 drum and bugle teams will stop for the Pittsburg show, including 11-time world champions the Blue Devils of Concord, Ohio. Other teams participating will be the Bluecoats of Canton, Ohio; the Cascades of Seattle, Wash.; the Madison team of Madison, Wis.; the Pioneers of Milwaukee, Wis.; and the Spirit of JSU, of Jacksonville, Ala.
The teams will consist of musicians ages 14 to 22 who use mostly percussion and brass instruments. Teams will have up to 135 members in their groups. The teams will also implement choreography and original music into their performances.
This is the fourth year that PSU has hosted the event.
Two fans and 23 corps members received medical attention for heat-related injuries at last year's Brass Spectacular, as temperatures exceeded 100 degrees.
