The university has appointed Wanda Endicott as director of custodial and general services and Tom Amershek as director of trades department and landscape maintenance, both in the Physical Plant.
In the past, the department has been under one director, Larry Nokes, who recently retired, but university administrators are dividing the job into two areas of responsibilities.
Endicott and Amershek have been working together for 13 years, and they say they're eager to take on new challenges.
"We are very thankful for the opportunity and the (university's) confidence in our abilities," said Amershek.
The two have lots of experience within the university. Endicott has been at PSU for nearly 21 years and Amershek for more than 13. They expect that a more rigorous schedule will come with their new positions.
"There will be more meetings, more interactions with the safety committee and crisis management, and more involvement with general university decision making," said Endicott. "We will also be working to improve communications with the campus concerning planning and scheduling."
In their years at PSU, the two have encountered a great range of incidents from frightening to funny.
"A few years ago we were called in at about 2:30 in the morning to the Weede," Endicott said. "Strong winds were causing problems with the roof. As we watched the roof raise up and slam down, we decided that maybe we shouldn't be standing there."
The two have dealt with snakes in offices, skunks inside buildings, floods and broken water lines in the winter, Amershek said.
"One day I noticed a dead squirrel on the sidewalk; he was a little charred so I knew that there was going to be a power outage somewhere."
The two share a long history with PSU. Endicott says she is proud that her two daughters are PSU graduates, while Amershek graduated from PSU after studying engineering.
Both say they want to use their passion for the university to help carry PSU into the future.
