Students will be welcomed back to PSU this semester with several changes made in the Overman Student Center. Jeff Steinmiller, director of the student center, says that all changes are part of an ongoing effort to improve the center.
"A lot of these things are normal things and normal updates," said Steinmiller.
Carpeting has been replaced in the main lounge, and the Heritage and Inaugural rooms. Steinmiller says that most of the carpet had not been replaced in 11 years. The Heritage Room also will be getting new furniture, which is on order. An overhead projection system has also been placed in the Inaugural Room.
The Crimson and Gold Ballroom has been repainted and the floor will be refinished some time the week of July 30.
The Student Government Association office in the center basement has received new countertops and cabinetry as well. The remodels done to the SGA office came out of the SGA budget.
Jeremy Johnson, SGA president, says that he likes what is being done to the student center, but would like to see more.
"On an overall perspective, I think the changing of the roof is a really, really good thing," said Johnson.
Roof replacement is a maintenance project performed every 20 years on the student center. The roof should be completed by the time school starts.
The U-Club, a café-style area also in the center basement, has new computers. The upgrade takes six of the older iMac G3 models and replaces them with faster iMac G5 models.
Other changes made to the center have been new signage throughout the building to make offices and rooms easier to find. The game room also has a new billiard table, in addition to the other game tables.
These changes come in addition to last year's opening of a relaxation center, in which students can sit in motorized chairs for free massages. The relaxation room is located in the U-Club.
Payment for the remodeling and upgrades came out of the center's repair and replacement budget and from student and auxiliary fees.
Steinmiller says that the Jungle Lounge, which has a large-screen television and seating, will be remodeled soon as well.
