"Change is the part and parcel of university life," said Bryant. "New faces add energy and life to the academy. Without change, a university cannot survive."
Referring to recent deaths among university staff and faculty, Bryant said:
"It is right that we miss them. But these people, too, were agents of change."
Bryant's comments echoed those of Vice President for Academic Affairs Steve Scott, who spoke earlier in the presentation.
"It's said that adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it," Scott said. "Last year Pitt State's character was revealed."
Bryant also spoke about change in the form of additions to Pitt State, such as the new recreation center and future student health and performing arts centers.
Scott and Bryant weren't alone in their speeches, as Brenda Frieden, Randy Roberts and Paul Zagorski also spoke.
Following those speeches, the meeting moved to a formal introduction session for new faculty.
One by one, each department introduced its new members, making for a meeting that lasted over 90 minutes.
Notable announcements included the phased retirement of Pete Hamilton, formerly chair of the Communication Department and the installment of Vince Daino as director of the new recreation center.
Julie Samuels was also introduced as the new director of the Honors College.
