The new Student Government Association president and vice president wasted no time in promoting their No. 1 agenda during the SGA meeting Wednesday night: bringing diversity to campus.
Jeremy Johnson, president, said that many people attend multicultural events on campus every year, but that this event could be broadened.
"The problem is that the people who show up to see them aren't the ones that need to see the culture, it's the ones that don't come to the events," Johnson said.
To solve this problem, SGA voted unanimously to allocate $1,000 to provide one-third of the funding needed to bring a free Chinese music and dance performance to campus on Sept. 20.
The Tilford group, a diversity-driven group, approached Johnson about the issue of diversity on campus and offered the idea of bringing more culture into class agenda to get new students involved.
"We're hoping to incorporate diversity into the curriculum, make it a part of classes so that freshmen are required to go and have discussions, have writings and hopefully mostly be general education stuff," Johnson said.
In other business:
- SGA needs 16 more members. SGA cabinet member Stephanie Sebring, proposed the idea of talking to Freshman Experience teachers about allowing SGA members to speak during their classes to inform freshmen about SGA and the Big Event, an annual community service project.
"I want to increase student volunteering," said Sebring, Big Event director. "Right now we are getting about 100 job sites and without more volunteers, we can't expand. I don't want to turn people down."
* Andrea Cole, campus affairs director discussed posters and sidewalk chalking on campus, saying they all must be approved before being posted.
* Mallory Porter, public relations director, suggested improving the SGA Web site, adding more pictures and updating bulletin boards around campus. She also said that it would benefit SGA to put together a brochure for the organization.
The next SGA meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Governors room of the Student Center. Students needing to address a campus issue are invited.
