Diversity remained the focus of discussion at the Student Government Association meeting Wednesday night when President Jeremy Johnson promoted an event that he referred to as "the granddaddy of diversity."
The Colonial Fox Foundation, whose goal is to rejuvenate the old Colonial Fox Theater on Broadway, is asking for donations to pay the building's mortgage. They have asked SGA for a donation of $200. The proposal will be taken up again at the next SGA meeting.
Vice President Larry Fleury said the theater would make possible cultural events for the campus and the community. Johnson agreed, saying that once the project was completed, the people of the community "will be able to do almost anything."
"At the beginning of the year, Larry and I told people that we would be doing things to promote diversity, and I think that is something SGA should be doing anyway, even without the vice president and myself," Johnson said, "I think that the Colonial Theater is a great way to do that."
Johnson also addressed recent parking lot problems caused by the switching of the blue and brown parking behind Grubbs Hall. He said he spoke with someone from Facilities Planning who told him that although there is no plan to switch the parking back, there is another solution. Property has been acquired east of the lot behind Grubbs that could make room for 20 to 30 more student parking spaces.
In other business:
- Fleury announced that SGA still needs 16 Senate positions filled. SGA received 29 applications and will hold meetings Friday and Wednesday to interview the applicants.
"We are looking for people who are determined and who really want to change things and get involved on campus," Fleury said.
- Jon Eastman, academic affairs director, discussed rewriting a dead week policy that will work better for students and faculty. Eastman said that the first academic affairs committee meeting will be held soon and changes to the policy will be discussed.
The next SGA meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Governors Room of the Student Center.
