Daino, who is now the first director of PSU's Student Recreation Center and the Intramural Sports Program, first came to PSU in 1991 to study recreation and, later, physical education. While here, he earned a position on the Gorilla football team, lettering in both 1994 and 1995.
Daino also played a key role as a student in organizing the intramural sports program at PSU from 1992 until 1995.
"During my time working with the intramural program, I did research about campus recreation and the benefits it provided to the university and its students. I feel I planted a seed that is sprouting today with the new SRC (Student Recreation Center)," Daino said.
After graduating from PSU, Daino worked with Upper90 Sports in Kansas City for three years.
"I was responsible for organizing an amateur national championship tournament for indoor and outdoor soccer," Daino said.
However, Daino was drawn back to the field of academia. He took a position at Marquette University in Milwaukee, where he was in charge of student development for 300 student employees, as well as the manager of one of the student recreation centers on campus.
Daino changed jobs nine months later, when Purdue University offered him the position of assistant director of club sports and summer camps.
Daino remained at Purdue for eight years before returning to PSU.
Even though he's been back at PSU for only a short time, Daino already has set both short- and long-term goals.
In the short term, Daino says he wants "to offer the students and staff at PSU a top notch fitness/recreation center, to educate and promote physical well-being along with giving the students at PSU the opportunity to participate in structured intramural activities as well as having a great informal recreation program."
Still, Daino looks to the future.
"Long term, I would like to make PSU's recreational sports department one of the top programs in the state of Kansas and region in regards to student involvement and satisfaction," Daino said.
