Throngs of people, a riot of voices, bright colors, and the announcement of Pitt State royalty marked the 2007 Homecoming Convocation, held Wednesday, Oct. 24, in Carnie Smith Stadium.
Although it was chilly despite being held at noon, the "Yeah!"s from the crowd were powerful enough to cut through the wind.
PSU President Tom Bryant, in a speech before the crowning of this year's king and queen, said that homecoming convocation is "a great tradition" in the rich cultural heritage of Pitt. Students also had the chance to meet last year's king and queen, Nick Dellasega and Jodi Smardo. Smardo said it was a "fun time and great experience."
Finally, the homecoming king and queen of 2007 were crowned by Smardo and Dellasega. Cherrelle Jones, senior in biology, was crowned queen, while Zac Robinson, senior in plastics engineering, was crowned king.
"It feels great," said Jones, adding that future queens should "definitely consider it an honor."
Jones was sponsored by the Black Student Association and is a member of the Crimson Club, Student Ambassadors and the Brand-Marketing Council.
Robinson's comments echoed those of Jones.
"It feels awesome," he said.
Robinson, a football player and member of SPE, MVP and various football-related organizations, was sponsored by Alpha Sigma Alpha.
But the crowning itself was not the only attraction at convocation. Bright gymnastics coupled with dances peppered the stadium before the announcements. Gus the Gorilla did a dance routine with cheerleadersin keeping with the theme of "Here's Your Host, Gust Gorilla."
"It didn't scare me," said Jennifer Boch, student in elementary education and one of the dancers. "I was a little nervous, though."
And before the crowning, winners of the other homecoming competitions such as Yard Art and Yell Like Hell were announced.
