Teams are needed for a day of bowling to raise funds for charity.
Bowl for Kids' Sake, an annual fund-raiser for Big Brothers and Big Sisters, will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Holiday Lanes. Funds raised through pledges gathered by teams will cover operating expenses and "matches" for the children of Crawford County.
A "match" pairs an adult in the community who is willing to volunteer one to three hours a week with a child. Most children in need of matches come from single-parent households.
"Statistics show that children, ages six to seventeen, are significantly less likely to drop out of high school, use drugs or become pregnant," said Darron Farhah, university attorney, who helps with the program.
Big Brothers and Big Sisters spend a few hours a week doing everyday activities like cooking dinner or doing laundry. Volunteering doesn't require spending money - rather, the focus is on providing a child quality time with a mentor.
The organization says it is in desperate need of male volunteers.
There are two ways to volunteer to be a Big Brother or Big Sister. The traditional way consists of donating one to three hours a week with a child, while a newer "non-traditional" way is by sharing a child's lunch hour once a week at school.
Bowling teams consist of one team leader and four other group members. College groups are encouraged to raise $75 in pledges per person to be collected by Big Brothersand Big Sisters at a later date.
Greek bowlers are given an incentive: The fraternity and sorority to raise the most money will share a gift certificate to Chatters.
College teams are encouraged to bowl during the 5 p.m. time slot. There will be food and prize donations available for all participating teams.
Tables will be set up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, and Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the Overman Student Center, at which students can sign up for bowling.
