The absence of over one-third of student senators left those in attendance scrambling to meet quorum at Wednesday night's Student Government Association meeting.

"We actually had quite a few senators that were home sick that we knew weren't going to make it," Eddie Penner, vice president of SGA, said. "This semester we're going to really work hard to enforce the absence policy; something that hasn't been made a big deal of in the past."

Penner explained that there has been a problem with attendance this semester. He reminded the senators that they need to serve their office hours and sign in when they do to ensure that they are getting credit. This week, somewhere near 50 percent of senators served their required office hours.
The meeting began at 7:37 p.m. without quorum and at around 7:50 p.m. a recess was called to see if other senators could be reached to attend. With nearly every senator in attendance on their cell phones, SGA finally reached quorum at the end of their 15-minute recess and the meeting continued.
When the meeting resumed:

- Sen. Skannd Tyagi was sworn in as the new academic affairs director. The position was previously held by Jon Eastman, who is now the legislative affairs director. After Larry Fleury's resignation as vice president, Penner, former legislative affairs director, was promoted to vice president.

- A resolution to allocate $849.63 from the carryover budget for a new SGA laptop to be used at meetings was unanimously passed by members of the Senate.

The next SGA meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Balkans Room of the Overman Student Center. Anyone needing to address a campus issue is invited to attend.
