There will be new faces in new places for next year's Gorilla football season.

On Jan. 10, David Wiemers and Steve Wells were announced as the additions to the Pitt State coaching staff.

David Wiemers replaces 13-year defensive coordinator Anton Stewart, after Stewart stepped down from his position in the off-season.

Wiemers previously served as Emporia State's head football coach from 2001 to 2006, and most recently was the offensive coordinator for Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.
"I'm tickled to death to be back - this is where I started as a coach, and there was not a better place for me to coach where it felt like home," said Wiemers. "We have a great staff here at Pitt State, and to be a part of it is a great feeling."

Wiemers takes over a defense that allowed more than 350 yards per game last season, but looks forward to the challenge.

While coaching linebackers at Saginaw Valley State, Wiemers assembled a defense that totaled school-records 44 sacks and 29 forced turnovers.

"It's not hard to see that we have some great players coming back on the defensive side of the ball," said Wiemers. "Most importantly, we're getting older and more experienced on defense, and we think with some adjustments and additional players that we'll give them everything they need to succeed."
Steve Wells, a former All-American lineman for the Gorillas, replaces his old coach Bill Kroenke, who resigned on Nov. 30 to become the assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions at PSU.

"It's a great professional opportunity for me, because coaching here at Pitt State has always been a dream of mine," said Wells.
Wells, who also served as a graduate offensive lineman for the Gorillas from 2002 to 2004, was an All-American lineman his senior year in a Gorilla uniform.

"The university, the city of Pittsburg, and the football team have given me so much, so this is an opportunity for me to give back... and it feels like coming home, almost."

With three starters returning from this year's team, Wells says a mixture of experience and talent will be key.

"There is a great deal of experience coming back for next year's squad, but hopefully we can have some young players come in and play for us," said Wells. "I think we'll have a good balance between the two, and I'm very excited to be working with all of those individuals in the future."

Wells' and Wiemers' first action will be against Central Oklahoma on Aug. 30.
