Golden's art is currently on tour in a solo exhibition, and will be displayed in San Diego, Calif.
His new exhibit details the brutal murder of West Virginian Arthur "JR" Warren, a gay black man who was beaten to death and run over with a Camaro on July 4, 2000. Golden relocated from New York to West Virginia to study the community and the murderer's trials.
The works consist of illustrations on transparent pages, with a notable quote or phrase from the trial, community, and press repeated in the background through means of reverse type; the statements are only legible by looking through a rearview mirror, putting the viewer in the murderer's position.
While Golden won't display his recent works locally, he will offer a workshop the evening of Feb. 13, in Porter Hall from 6 to 10 p.m. The Book Art Workshop has limited availability, offering seats for 20 students, with the UAA Silent Auction donors and participants receiving first priority. The deadline for sign-up is Feb. 8, and a fee of $25 applies.
The following morning, Feb. 14, a breakfast reception will be held in Porter Hall from 11 to 12 noon in honor of Golden's return to PSU. Golden will be available to discuss his current work.
In 2006, an exhibit of Golden's tar paintings drew admirers at Porter Hall. A gallery of his work is available at www.pittstate.edu/art/univgal/RoryGolden/.
Refreshments will be served and everyone is invited to attend.
