The Student Government Association barely made quorum Wednesday night when its meeting began at 7:30 p.m., after having similar troubles the previous week. The meeting lasted a shorter-than-average half-hour.
Despite the scant Student senate presence, business continued as usual.
Jon Eastman, legislative affairs director, announced that he needs more people to attend Higher Education Day next Tuesday and Wednesday in Topeka.
"Higher Education Day is an opportunity for the students of Pittsburg State University to go to Topeka and tell their senators and representatives why the state should continue to support universities," Eastman said. "It's an opportunity that, frankly, you don't get very often."
Eastman explained that Higher Education Day or "Higher Ed Day" isn't restricted to SGA members. Any PSU student is eligible to go.
Those attending will leave Tuesday night and will return Wednesday evening. Hotel accommodations and breakfast on Wednesday morning will be paid by SGA. Those interested in attending should contact the SGA office at 235-4810 or email Eastman at sgalegad@pittstate.edu.
Eastman also announced that SGA will hold a contest for PSU students to change the words to the fight song. The current fight song, Eastman said, only works for one sport: football. Eastman also explained that most people don't know the right lyrics to the song.
"Both of these problems can be remedied by holding a lyrics competition," Eastman said. "We'll get the fight song music out there again and we'll get students interested in the fight song again. It will be something that can be done at any sport and not just football. Yes, we have sports other than football on this campus."
In other business:
*Eddie Penner, vice president, announced a resolution that in order to function properly, SGA needs a full senate. Penner said that the senate vacancy committee has conducted interviews and selected 7 of the best possible candidates. The resolution was moved into second reading of next weeks meeting.
The next SGA meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Balkans Room of the Overman Student Center. Anyone needing to address a campus issue is invited to attend.
