The Pittsburg State baseball team traveled to Lawton, Okla. for a four-game set against Cameron University on Feb. 2 and 3 - with disappointing results.

After dropping their first two games 7-4 and 4-0 on Saturday, the Gorillas returned on Sunday and dropped its two contests 6-1 and 7-4.

In the first game, Pitt State struck first blood with a RBI-single by junior outfielder Austin Kirkwood. Cameron came back to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, leading to a 3-2 ballgame going into the seventh.

Sophomore Jonathan Ross swatted a two-run down to give Pitt State the 4-3 advantage, before junior Mitch Cooper allowed four earned-runs to secure the 7-4 victory for Cameron.
Cameron's Justin Kirkpatrick allowed PSU only three hits in the second game, and junior Jason Porta tossed three scoreless innings to close out the 4-0 loss.

Entering the game on Sunday, Pittsburg State started out strong defensively with four-innings of scoreless play, but failed to turnout any runs at the plate.

Junior pitcher Tim Brown was nearly perfect in his first four innings of the ball game, but Cameron tattooed the Gorillas for six-runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 6-0 advantage.
Senior infielder Brett Hothan rocketed a one-run homer to score Pitt's lone run of the game, but the team still gave Cameron its third-straight victory.

Despite 10 team hits, including three from junior Taylor House and senior A.J. Loyd, the Gorillas weren't able to hold on to their 2-0 lead, as Cameron scored seven-straight runs to oust the Gorillas 7-4.

For the series, Ross finished with two RBI's and Loyd smacked six hits for PSU. On the mound, Pitt State allowed an average of six runs over the double twin-bill.

A year after losing three all-region players to graduation, one might think that a youth movement highlighted the Gorillas for the season, but Bever says that's not the case.

"We have some young players that with some more game experience will turn out very good for us," said Bever. "But we've still got a lot of upperclassmen and we brought in some junior college players, so we aren't too, too young - but we'll be ready to go for Wayne State."

For head coach Steve Bever, the problem wasn't that his team didn't play well; it was the level of competition they faced.
"I felt like we played well, but Cameron played better," said Bever. "We've got some stuff to work on, and we'll look to get better for our next game."

Pitt State travels back to the comfort of Al Ortolani Field to face Wayne State on February 16 and 17, with both games starting at noon.

I see a lot of potential chemistry with this team. Coach is right the scores and losses may not indicate that. But I feel if they stick with the fundamentals and believe in their selfs by watching them in Lawton they could have a major shot at making it to the Regionals. (Continued…)
