After driving the lane, Pitt State's DePrice Taylor, sophomore guard, takes to the air to attempt a lay up. Trailing Missouri Western for most of the game, the Gorillas came back to win the game, 73-65.

If the last 5:43 of the Gorillas' first half had been any indication, it might have left some with the wrong impression in Pitt State's 73-65 victory Wednesday night over Missouri Western.

Late in the first half, junior Victoria Martin found herself on the other end of a sophomore DePrice Taylor assist, bringing the Gorillas within one at 24-23.

Following the basket, Pitt State was held scoreless for more than five minutes, until Bailey Waugh put away an open lay-up. Sophomore Emily Sloan finished the half by sinking two free throws, giving Western the 6-point lead going into the half.

PSU returned in the second half with a 7-2 run to begin play, and rode that momentum to a 60-59 showdown with only 4:18 left to go in the game.

Pitt State finished off the game on a 13-6 run, set off by 11 made free throws. On the night, the Gorillas went 24-for-29 (83 percent), including four players who combined to go a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.

The Gorillas (10-12, 4-9 MIAA) were led by sophomore Marissa Poppe with 18 points and seven rebounds, despite playing for only 19 minutes.

Seven other Gorillas scored more than five points in the contest, including Taylor, who scored seven points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out four assists on the night.

In the victory, the Gorillas grabbed 47 rebounds, including 13 offensive boards. Poppe, Taylor and junior Brianna Buchanan all totaled seven rebounds in the game.
In addition to a stout offensive performance, Pitt State also caused the Griffons to shoot only 32 percent from the floor, and caused 13 turnovers.

With the win, the Gorillas get their second victory in their last three games, coming off of a seven-game losing skid.
PSU moves on to face Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Mo., at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16.
