Life is difficult right now for President Tom Bryant and his office as they work in Topeka and on campus to prepare for the 2009 fiscal year.
Bryant says that it will be in April or May that he will get a feel of the final decisions and that those decisions will not be finalized until June.
"The timing is sometimes difficult for the university community, but it is the only way it can be done," Bryant said.
Also part of the budgeting for next year is tuition, Bryant says. A tuition committee composed of students and faculty meets on campus regularly for discussions. The result of their work will be a tuition recommendation to Bryant.
The Board of Regents also has a lot of say in tuition, Bryant says.
"The university encourages them to try to keep tuition under 6 percent," Bryant said. "We always hope for less."
In Topeka, PSU's state-level representative, Howard Smith, looks out for the university's interests, Bryant says.
"He is working on the budget for next year, keeping track of bills that may have some effect on us," Bryant said.
Bryant says that the Legislature has a lot of input on what happens next year.
"My point is the thing that is going on in Topeka and the thing we have to do back here on campus work together as we get ready for the next fiscal year, which starts next July," Bryant said.
According to PSU's Web site, Bryant and John Patterson, vice president of administration and campus life, were in Topeka on Tuesday, Feb. 19, to present PSU's budget to the Senate Ways and Means budget committee.
