PSU beefing up campus safety options

"We're going to have building team leaders for each of our buildings," Smith said. "One of the things we're going to be doing in March is bringing those people together."
Smith says that building leaders and floor leaders will be trained, but it will be difficult to make sure one of these people is present at all times.
"One of the biggest problems we run into is cross-training," he said. "What if the person you trained isn't there?"
Smith is hesitant to give details on the cost of the messaging system because it will have to be bid out to contractors. But he did say it's been a costly investment for other schools.
"I know that some universities have put as much as 60, 70, 80,000 into developing their own," Smith said. "I think there's software that can be purchased between $5,000 and $10,000 that you can use on an annual basis. But one of the things we want to be careful of is buying a system that will be outdated in a couple of years."
But, Smith says, PSU may have to do even more to improve security when the Kansas Board of Regents issues its safety requirements later this semester.
"We think we have everything in place ... but they're hiring a consultant to look at the crisis management plans for all universities," Smith said.

I believe the text messaging is a good idea, however, will this cause more students to keep their cell phones on during classes. I realize many students already use their text message while in class and I find it to be distracting at times. (Continued…)
