"Tuesdays are the only day of the week I went," said Montis, freshman in broadcasting. "I'm not going to go anymore. It's too expensive."
Montis is not the only Pitt State student who was surprised to hear about the fast-food restaurant's Tuesday tradition.
"I'm a little aggravated," said Adrien Stolifer, freshman in communication. "Why would they take away something that brought in so many customers?"
Subway's footlongs aren't being taken off the menu; they just won't be half off on Tuesdays anymore. Although the popular special will no longer be available, restaurant employees say they are anticipating the success of new specials.
"There will be daily specials now for a certain sub each day," said Amanda Hall, sophomore in history and a Subway employee. " Our owners are hoping to spread out sales throughout the week."
Donald and Dennis Rottinghouse, owners of about 300 Subway locations across the Midwest, decided to end the special at several of their restaurants, including the two in Pittsburg.
However, there are still Subway franchises that will continue promoting Footlong Tuesdays, such as the locations in Joplin, Mo.
Lisa Paola, a Subway spokeswoman, says the participation in promotions "may vary location to location." According to Paola, each Subway location is independently owned and operated.
With only three more Footlong Tuesdays left, employees say they are expecting an even bigger lunch rush than what they are used to having.
"People are going crazy about it," said Kyle Marlin, freshman at Pitt State and an employee at Subway.
Shelly Phillips, manager of the South Pittsburg location, says she is not thrilled about this.
"It's going to be Tuesdays seven days a week instead of one," said Phillips.
Megan Free, sophomore in physical education, says she still plans to eat at the restaurant.
"I usually only come on Tuesdays," said Free. "I don't eat any other fast food, so I'll still come back, just not as much."
Although there are students who will go to Subway regardless of the special's demise, others feel it is time to find another restaurant.
"Now I have to find a new place for lunch," said Montis.
