Student says Huckabee is 'right man for the job'

Dustin Lattimer prides himself on being a conservative Republican and a strong Christian. His choice for the 2008 presidential election, Mike Huckabee, shares these views and according to Lattimer, is just what this country needs.
"I, myself, am a Christian and believe that our nation's leader needs to represent that religion's beliefs and morals," said Lattimer, a junior in communication. "Huckabee is the strongest Christian, from what I've observed, and would make a great leader from a Christian's perspective."
Lattimer explained that Huckabee, who is a former governor of Arkansas, was a preacher before becoming governor. Because of Huckabee's beliefs, Lattimer said, his followers include Christian evangelicals, conservatives and pro-life advocates.
Huckabee has not dropped out of the race for the Republican Party nomination for president even though he trails far behind Sen. John McCain, the presumptive nominee, in the number of delegates won.
Lattimer says that although Huckabee's religious views are important, they aren't the only reason that the candidate remains his No. 1 choice.
"There are several issues that make me believe Huckabee is the right man for the job," Lattimer said. "I'm a strong conservative Republican. It's well known that Huckabee is the most conservative candidate on the campaign trail."
Another important issue, Lattimer says, is Huckabee's conservative spending. During his time as governor, Huckabee pushed big tax cuts for residents of his state and enacted a $90 million tax relief package for Arkansas families, Lattimer said.
"I vote not just on the issues that portray my political views, but because of what the conservative candidate believes in and represents," Lattimer said.
Another issue that Huckabee represents is some "interesting" plans on immigration and national security, Lattimer said. Huckabee is promoting a "Secure America Plan," which would ensure that a surveillance camera system be installed along the Mexican border by July 1, 2010. That plan also includes increasing the number of border patrol agents.
"Huckabee's plan includes no amnesty for illegal aliens," Lattimer said.
Huckabee proposed a "Fair Tax" plan, basically a flat-rate federal sales tax, that is another point of interest for Lattimer. The plan proposes that U.S. citizens would get a monthly rebate that would reimburse them for sales taxes on purchases up to the poverty line, Lattimer said.
"That means people below the poverty line won't be taxed at all," Lattimer said. "We'll be taxed on what we decide to buy, not what we happen to earn."
A quote from Huckabee that Lattimer admires reads, "My faith is my life - it defines me. My faith doesn't influence my decisions, it drives them. For example, when it comes to the environment, I believe in being a good steward of the Earth. I don't separate my faith from my personal and professional lives."
"That quote alone is one of the strongest reasons why Mike Huckabee is my choice for president," Lattimer said.

Huckabee does not plan to create a state sponsored religion, which is what separation few church and state is about. He did not favor Christians over Jews or atheists in the laws he passed during his 10-1/2 years as governor. (Continued…)
