Pitt State football signed a two-year contract with Chadron State University to play a home and home series, filling the Gorillas' final open dates on the 2008 and 2009 football schedules.
"We had an agreement with Texas A&M and East Central that they would come here and play, but that had run out so we were trying to find a team to play a game this and next year," said head coach Chuck Broyles.
Pitt State will travel to Chadron, Neb., for the first face-off between the two teams on Sept. 6. The Gorillas will host Chadron in Pittsburg on Sept. 5, 2009.
"One of the things we wanted to do was to make sure that we have a home game at the start of the 2009 schedule," said Broyles. "We only had four home games because we are contracted to play Northwest at Arrowhead, and we just couldn't have a 2009 season with just four home games.
The agreement will give the PSU squad five home games and completes the schedule for the next two years.
The Eagles are part of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, where they are two-time defending champions. They were ranked at No. 5 in the AFCA Division II Top 25 poll in 2007, and had an undefeated regular season.
"Chadron is a Division II and an inter-regional team, so when you get to the NCAA playoffs, you get rewarded for playing Division II teams in and out of your region," said Broyles. "They have a good win-and-lose record, they've been in national playoffs so it's a good Division II team and good competition."
Broyles has coached at Pitt State for 18 years and holds a 182-39-02 record, including 14 trips to the NCAA playoffs and four Division II Championship games.
Chadron is expected to return seven offensive and nine defensive starters.
"I think they will be a very quality opponent, " said Broyles. "We are always looking forward to playing teams that are nationally ranked."
