Pittsburg is beginning to turn Irish.
Local bars and pubs have been preparing for St. Patrick's Day, which will be Monday, March 17, with brainstorming contests, prizes and gimmicks to get the local community out to their establishments.

A majority of the bars have booked live bands, and are giving out T-shirts, but others are trying something new.

The 505, located at 505 N. Broadway, is beginning its celebration on Thursday, March 13, and won't end until Monday. They will have specials on green bottles, will have a band come in Monday night, and a contest during the day about who would win in a fight, Kermit the Frog or the Lucky Charms leprechaun.

"I usually just look for the place with the best atmosphere, and the most going on," said Jake Fontes, senior in advertising.

But this year it seems as if most of the bars are competing for the best atmosphere.

The 311 Club, located at 313 E. 7th, will open its doors at 6 a.m. Monday, and the first 50 people inside will get free shirts. In addition, there will be no cover charge all day, and a live band will perform at night. The bar will sell pitchers, glasses and T-shirts to commemorate the holiday.

"What brings me out to a certain bar is usually cheap drinks, live bands and lots of festivities," said Alex Moore, senior in psychology.

An annual Pittsburg favorite is McCarthy's, which is especially appropriate for St. Patrick's Day, being the only Irish pub in town.

"I'm 75 percent Irish, so I feel like I must go to McCarthy's to celebrate my Irish heritage," said Katie Kanatzar, junior in education.

The big celebration at McCarthy's, though, is on Saturday. They will open at 9 a.m. and will have multiple bands perform, such as 4 Barrel and Monkey Bullet.

In addition, they will open the dance floor early and sell discounted drinks and shirts. Their Monday celebration will be similar to Saturday's, with the exception of no live bands.

Other bars in town, including J.B.'s, Tornado Lounge and Bootleggers, will have similar specials, including live bands, drink specials, and in some cases T-shirts.

"It's usually a fun time to float around and see what each bar is doing, because each one usually has its own thing going on with a different atmosphere," said Scott Hopson, junior in accounting.
