Student groups involved in the Multicultural Resource Center want to move to the Overman Student Center.

Representatives of Hispanics of Today and the Black Student Association will talk to SGA about moving to the student center so that they can be more visible to students.
These representatives say that a space in the student center would be ideal because it is a high traffic area. Their current space in the Office of Student Diversity lacks the space they need to work.

"How does a multicultural resource center tie into this building?" Brittany Gholson, a student employee in the Office of Student Diversity, asked. "Students come in here for financial aid or to pay their bills. We don't balance with the other offices of Horace Mann."

Gholson says that they are trying to get more minority students to come to PSU, and that a better location would help. The Multicultural Resource Center has been in its current location in the Office of Student Diversity at 104 Horace Mann for four years.

Anthony Moreno, a graduate assistant in the Office of Student Diversity, says that it is important for everyone to know about the program so that it can succeed.

Gholson says that about 30 students come to the center every day. They have four computers, and they would like to have better equipment for students to use.
But Jeff Steinmiller, director of the Overman Student Center, says he is at a loss.

"I don't think there is any space available," Steinmiller said.

The Office of Student Diversity provides services for the Black Student Association, Hispanics of Today, and the Native American Student Association.
The center's mission is to include everyone and to encourage involvement.
They would also like to bring up retention rates and encourage more diversity.
Members of the Black Student Association, one of the groups currently in the Multicultural Resource Center, say they would benefit from moving to the student center.

For one thing, the BSA would like to promote its scholarship opportunities. Gholson said that only two students applied for the scholarship last year.
The BSA was also involved in several Black History Month activities in February and early March.

Gholson says that while she wishes that Black History Month activities at PSU were planned earlier so that it did not last into March, she does not want to belittle the efforts that faculty and staff put into it.

She says that the members would like for Black History Month to be more of a collective experience, with events timed so that all can attend.

"We're just trying to anticipate growth on campus and diversity in general," Gholson said.
