The Pitt State softball team traveled to Pensacola last week to compete in the West Florida Invitational. The Gorillas faced two double headers against Freed-Hardeman and North Alabama.
The team was unable to come out successful, dropping all four games. The Gorillas lost 1-7 and 1-2 against North Alabama on March 17, and 1-3, 2-10 against Freed-Hardeman on March 19.
"Anytime you travel that far, there is a chance that you won't play well," said head coach Brad Horky. "We didn't play that bad, we just didn't have any breaks our way."
The team took the field next on Wednesday, March 25, against Southwest Baptist. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but pushed back a day because of weather.
The Gorillas scored three runs in the seventh inning to take a 4-3 win. An early lead in game two led to a 5-2 victory in this non-conference double header, breaking a five-game losing streak.
Three athletes, Abby Buche, Maria Bernal and Annie Thurber, were unable to play because of injuries.
"Considering all the injuries, I thought we played really well," said Horky. "They showed a lot of guts to win those two games."
Pitt State now holds a 12-13 overall record. Conference play will begin April 2, when the Gorillas face Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo.
The team will travel to Nebraska this weekend to compete in the Nebraska Omaha Invitational. They will face Minnesota-Duluth, Nebraska-Omaha and Southwest Minnesota State on March 29, and Augustana and Minnesota State on March 30.
Nebraska-Omaha traveled to Pittsburg to compete in the Pitt State Classic on March 1, where they suffered a loss to Pitt, 15-7.
"Nebraska is going to want some revenge from us beating them earlier in the year," said Horky.
