Vince Daino, director of the student recreation center and intramural sports, spoke to the Student Government Association at their meeting Wednesday night about increasing student fees to help fund the new recreation center upon its opening.
"This fee increase is something that's really going to be needed to help program that facility, staff it, get the equipment we need to run it and actually have a good facility for you guys," Daino said. "It's a great thing for Pittsburg State. The students here are getting a gift."
A resolution was presented to the SGA that proposed a $14 increase in addition to the current $12, making a total of $26 per student, per semester for the 2009 school year. The money allocated will be used to facilitate construction and pay the faculty.
Daino estimated that the building would be ready for student use by July.
"I hope you guys enjoy it and we'll enjoy having it open and having you guys in there," Daino said.
The resolution was voted on and passed unanimously.
In other business:
- R.J. Wilson, a lobbyist on behalf of the governor of Kansas, spoke to SGA about the negative aspects of coal-fired power plants. Wilson explained that he needed student support to help veto a bill that would allow the construction of two coal-fired power plants in the state of Kansas.
"If you are passionate about this issue and you think you see the issue the same as I do and you're not from Pittsburg, I would encourage you to contact your legislature," Wilson said.
Senators Jason Clark and Timi Meyers presented a resolution to hold a petition drive so that students can show their support of the issue, and to have send both a letter and petition to Kansas's representatives and senators.
"We hope that your resolution will be helpful in encouraging our local legislature to support the governor's veto," Wilson said.
- A resolution to increase student fees by $12 for the 2009 school year to fund the new student health center was presented to the SGA by Jon Eastman, legislative affairs director. The resolution was voted on and passed unanimously by the senate.
The next SGA meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, in the Balkans room of the Overman Student Center. Students wishing to address a campus issue are invited to attend.
