The Student Government Association will launch the 6th Annual Big Event at 9 a.m. at the Carnie Smith stadium. The one-day community service project is a way for Pitt State students to say "thank you" to the community.
"It was designed to help Pittsburg and Frontenac to complete jobs that others aren't able to do," said Bri Hotchkiss, Big Event coordinator.
Candidates for the help were chosen based on request forms turned in by March 7.
The Big Event was started in 1982 at Texas A & M University in College Station and has since expanded nationwide.
This year, students, faculty and student organizations like sports teams and Greek organizations have signed up to help.
"We could always use more volunteers on the day," said Hotchkiss. "This is our sixth time and it is our biggest yet."
Volunteers meet in the morning for breakfast and an opening presentation. They will then be teamed into groups. Lunch will be served as well, and drawings will be held for door prizes donated by local businesses.
"I've been involved in it through my sorority ... and now being the director helps me see the need and the good of the event," said Hotchkiss. "For me, it's really great."
Gray T-shirts showing a gorilla recycling bananas are being sold for $10 in the SGA office at the basement of the Overman Student Center. Hotchkiss says that there are only 25 left.
