Some of Pittsburg State's premeds students are trying to pay special attention to detail - car detail.

The premed students are offering to do car detail work to raise money for a trip to Peru. The members plan to go this summer to provide medical assistance and basic hygiene education to rural health clinics.
"We chose to detail cars because the cost of the trip is going to be expensive, with costs looking around $3,200 a student," said Tom Goff, premed junior.

Goff says the members chose car detailing as their fund-raiser because they thought it wouldn't be very time-consuming and would make the group a good deal of money.
"This is the first kind of trip that the premed group has done - we have never done something like this before," said Goff.
"This trip is special because we will be providing access to vaccinations, doing blood tests, and helping out that country, which doesn't have the resources that we do."

The organization they are working with is called Pro-World, which organizes such trips.

"I have never done car detailing, so I don't know if it will be easy or not, but overall the biggest reward will be doing the service and securing us going to Peru," Goff said.

Emily Walters, one of the premed students planning to go on the trip, says she's looking forward to the experience.
"The best part of going to Peru is the impact on my perspective," she said. "I hope to have the kind of
once-in-a-lifetime, world-view-changing event that you can't get at home.
"This whole thing is student-driven, student-led, student-organized, and a student came up with the idea, which makes this pretty special," said Walters, a junior.

About 20 students plan to go, accompanied by premed club adviser Daniel Zurek.
"This will be my first trip with a bunch of students," said Zurek, associate professor in biology. "I think that the students are going to pick up wonderful exposure from other cultures, and also the need for medical care out in the world, practical care, and (they will) interact with patients."

The club will detail on Monday, April 28, Wednesday, April 30, Thursday, May 1, and Friday, May 2. Exterior detailing will cost $50, interior will cost $50, and interior and exterior combined will be $85. The pick-up and return will cost $15. To arrange an appointment, call (417) 529-1653.
