Speaker Colleen Coffey will share her personal story of how she dealt with stress and its effects when she lectures at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom in the Overman Student Center.
As an incentive for students to attend, campus wellness organization Gorillas in Your Midst will hand out one $25, one $50 and one $100 Wal-Mart gift card at the end of the program. Students hoping to win a gift card must have their PSU ID with them to win.
J.T. Knoll, coordinator for student prevention and wellness, says Coffey's story will prove invaluable for students dealing with their own stresses.
"She is a speaker who has succeeded in her life despite some eating disorders and anxiety and depression," Knoll said.
Knoll says that Coffey is close enough in age to most PSU students that students will be able to identify with her experiences. Knoll says he hopes hearing how Coffey dealt with her problems will encourage students to look for healthy solutions to their own problems.
"Student stress comes in a variety of ways," Knoll said. "Students sometimes say, 'Boy I'm stressed out,' but what I want them to do is delineate that. What we want students to do is identify stress and figure out how to take care of it."
Knoll says students attending the lecture will receive good advice not only for themselves, but their friends as well.
"Probably the best thing you can say to a friend who's undergoing some stress is this: 'How can I help?'" Knoll said.
Coffey's talk is only one of several events Knoll has planned for April 21-25, or "Reduce Your Stress for More Success" week. The other events are as follows:
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, April 21 - Stress reduction and education interactive table, mood card giveaway and free brain food - Overman Student Center.
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 21 - Stress reduction and education interactive table, outdoor games, "Pet a Pet," SEK Humane Society info table, mood card giveaway and free brain food - the Oval.
