Methods of coping with difficult childhood behavior are the topics of PSU's Department of Psychology and Counseling 2008 Summer Institute, beginning in June. Courses offered will cover issues regarding bullying and autism, as well as a certification course for participants to serve as Red Cross volunteers.
"These workshops are relevant to families, school personnel and people who provide any kind of health services," said Rick Lindskog, professor in psychology and counseling.
A $70 fee applies for each workshop attended, although course credit can be earned for PSU students by enrolling online or by contacting the Department of Psychology and Counseling.
John W. Maag, professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will present a lecture on coping with and managing difficult personalities and how caregivers can deter and reduce resistance in others. Maag has about 90 articles and book chapters published and has authored four books. His lecture, "You Can't Make Me! Approaches and Techniques for Managing Resistance," will be presented on July 24-25 in 316 Hughes Hall.
Some of the things that attendees will learn from Maag's lecture is how to acknowledge the functions behaviors serve and gain insight into reinforcement and punishment and how to use them effectively.
This will be the third year for the Psychology and Counseling Summer Institute. Speakers are chosen through suggestions during faculty meetings.
