Every summer, though, they get together for an hour or so of relaxation at the Classified Employees Recognition Picnic, this year held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at the lower level of Carnie Smith Stadium.
"I think it's going to be fun," said Marcus Hall, of custodial and general services, who attended the event for the first time. Around him, PSU staffers chatted at their tables while music played in the background.
The purpose is to show the university's appreciation to the classified staff.
"Classified employees are very important to university," said John Patterson, vice president for admission and campus life. "This is our way of saying thanks for outstanding work they have been doing throughout the year."
Sandy Keltner, custodial and general services, agrees.
"The whole purpose of the event is to raise morale and to get together those people who usually do not meet each other on campus," said Keltner. Another PSU employee, Mary Prince of housing custodial services, emphasized the importance of employees' getting together socially.
"We all work together; that is No. 1," she said.
The classified staff picnic has been held for six years, according to Michele Sexton, director of budget and human resource services.
"Before, we used to pick the employee of the year for this ceremony, but now we've stopped and now recognize everybody," she said.
Helping with the recognition was PSU President Tom Bryant.
"Thank you for taking care of our students and for the safe environment we have on this campus," he said. "Thank you for having hot water," he quipped, referring to the work Physical Plant plumbers performed to fix a leak in his house.
The picnic closed with a drawing of names for prizes, including cups, Pitt State T-shirts, barbecue sets, notepads and two tickets to the Missouri Southern vs. PSU football game scheduled Sept. 13.
