Incoming freshmen will be soon welcomed by an assortment of music, tours, freebies and other entertainment when OFF2PSU kicks off on Sunday, Aug. 24.
The events, meant to ease freshmen into life at PSU, will be held from Sunday, Aug. 24, to Thursday, Sept. 4. Edie McCracken, program coordinator for Campus Activities, says she left Friday, Sept. 5, free so students can "celebrate and de-stress that the first week is over."
The events start at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, with Gorilla Warm-Ups in the Oval. Freshmen will be able to meet their Freshman Experience instructors, tour buildings, ring the bell near Axe Library, and hear from guest speakers.
At 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, in Cleveland Plaza, the band Florez will play, and free food and games will be available.
"I hear bands all the time," McCracken said. "(Florez's) sound is unique, but it's a style of music that I think a lot of people will appreciate."
McCracken says one of the band's members was a cast member of "Survivor: China."
Then at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, a Gorilla Superstar karaoke contest sponsored by the Residence Hall Assembly will be held in the U-Club downstairs in Overman Student Center. McCracken says there will be prizes for the top finishers.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27, a Community Fair will be held in the Oval. Seventy-two businesses came last year to hand out information and all sorts of freebies to PSU students, and McCracken says even more will likely attend this year.
From 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, students can meet in the student center for tours of sorority houses.
Then at 7 and 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3, hypnotist Michael C. Anthony will perform in the Crimson and Gold Ballroom in the student center. Anthony has become something of a PSU tradition.
"We've always gotten really positive feedback on the show," McCracken said. "The show's always different because the students being hypnotized are different."
McCracken says this will be the second year that Anthony will perform two shows in one night for PSU students.
The last OFF2PSU event happens to be a recurring one - Karaoke Night sponsored by Gorillas in Your Midst, running from 8 to 11 p.m. in the U-Club. The group holds a Karaoke Night once a month throughout the school year.
