Welcome to the beginning of a new academic year at Pittsburg State University! This is always an exciting time because it is the beginning of so many wonderful things. This year is particularly exciting because of the great things that directly affect students.
You have the honor of being the first classes to use the new student recreation center on the east side of campus. This beautiful new facility is one of the finest of its kind and I know you will make good use of it. It will provide a wonderful place for you to work out as well as terrific facilities for intramural athletic events.
This fall, you will see work begin on a new student health center at Lindburg and Broadway. What makes this facility unique is the fact that a significant portion of the cost has been covered with private gifts. Last spring, the students expressed their enthusiastic support for a small fee to support a portion of the cost, but the university continues to work hard to find private gifts to reduce or even eliminate that cost to students.
Across campus, you'll see all kinds of evidence of the ways the university is changing to serve students better. New parking lots, safety enhancements, major renovations in McCray Hall, and many other projects will be completed or under way when you arrive. Even more are in the planning stages.
We hope these projects enrich your Pitt State experience. The key to your success, however, is in your hands. Take advantage of the great support system we have put in place to ensure your academic success. Take responsibility for going to class and doing the work. Be open to meeting people from different backgrounds who may hold different points of view. Take advantage of the cultural and social opportunities the university offers. Stretch your horizons and be open to the wider world.
